Telford College opening event

17.10.2012

McPhillips’ project to convert a former sports hall building into a state of the art construction training centre for Telford College of Arts and Technology was officially opened by Tom Gray, CEO of the Southwater Event Group, on 16 October 2012.  The opening ceremony formed part of a breakfast event organised by the College to introduce the facility to local employers, Council officials and prospective students and was attended by over 70 guests.  Visitors were treated to tours around the centre to demonstrate the cutting edge technological innovations include within the project to enhance the learning experience.  The Centre will be used to train 80 full-time students, 60 part time students, 30 intermediate apprentices and 20 advanced apprentices and features 20 multi-purpose workstations for the tuition of civil engineering and building skills featuring integrated IT facilities including Ipads.

Tom Gray commented: “I feel very honoured to open what looks like a fantastic and a much- needed facility”.

McPhillips were delighted to have completed the project on time and under budget which enabled the Centre to open as planned for the beginning of the 2012 academic year and in our role as main contractor there was a requirement to engage with construction students from the college and deliver a series of events educating them on the operation of a live site and associated day to day activities. McPhillips were ideally placed to be able to over-deliver on the training requirements through the employment of our own Apprentices and those of our supply chain and 175 Apprentice man days were provided during the 16 week project with, on-average, 2 Apprentices on-site at any one time.

Speaking about the project TCAT Principal Janet Ellis said: “McPhillips have been professional, helpful and ready to listen to us as the client and take action quickly and with the minimal of fuss when issues were identified” and the Architect Pinnegar Hayward Design of Birmingham commented: “from Head Office management through to Site Management, the level of service and customer care was amongst the highest in my experience of the construction industry”.

McPhillips is passionate about investing in the next generation and has operated an in-house Apprenticeship scheme for the last 14 years. Over 60 young people have successfully completed our Scheme and over 20% of our current workforce were formerly McPhillips Apprentices. We currently have a number of Apprentices undertaking their training at TCAT and think the vision embodied in the new Centre really demonstrates the College’s commitment to provide best in class construction training across the UK and we are fortunate to have this facility on our doorstep.
