Constructing Excellence Title

Constructing Excellence National title

Following a year of UK sporting success McPhillips are delighted to have struck their own gold in London. The leading regional civil engineering and building contractor, based in Telford and covering the Midlands, North West and Wales won Project of the Year for Dogs Trust Shrewsbury in the Constructing Excellence National Awards 2012 hosted at the Tower Hotel, London on 30th November 2012.

McPhillips had previously received the Project of the Year title in the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence (WMCCE) awards over the summer and flew the flag for the West Midlands region at the gathering of all the regional event winners, winning the top prize in front of over 450 construction industry figures.

Dogs Trust Shrewsbury is a £5.25m re-development of an existing Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre into one of the most environmentally friendly buildings in the world, and was adopted by the West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence as a construction industry best practice demonstration project. The world’s foremost building sustainability rating organisation – BREEAM, awarded the centre their top ‘Outstanding’ certification and the highest post construction rating of over 200,000 BREEAM assessed buildings worldwide. In addition to WMCCE’s Project of the Year the project had previously won a BREEAM 2012 award, Green Apple Gold Award and been Highly Commended by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Designed by Shrewsbury based Napier and Company and opened in August 2011 by Mark Pritchard MP, Dogs Trust Shrewsbury is intended to offer cutting edge animal welfare facilities for its canine inhabitants as well as its staff and was designed to reduce energy costs by 70% in comparison to a traditional rehoming centre through use of Passivhaus airtightness and ventilation principles, subterranean buildings, recycled insulation, solar PV, biomass boiler, district heating system, water recycling and green roofs.

Speaking about the award McPhillips’ Marketing Manager Mark Kiddie said: “When the client, principal contractor, supply chain and design team integrate and work as well together as we did at Dogs Trust Shrewsbury the results speak for themselves. Dogs Trust’s aspiration and vision for the centre was inspiring and Constructing Excellence’s involvement enabled the team to focus on key measurable deliverables of integration and collaboration, sustainability and customer satisfaction.”
