This £2million project to create a new roundabout on the A5 at Telford for a new Vistry Homes development of over 400 dwellings is nearing completion.
Works consisted of widening and re-profiling over 650m of the live A5 trunk road from Telford to Cannock, overseen by Telford and Wrekin Council’s Highway Department. A new positive drainage system, new road signage and street lighting also formed part of the scheduled work. Complex diversions were required to enable a number of new service and utility installations.
Additional to the new roundabout, associated splitter islands and layby improvement works, there are now two new toucan controlled pedestrian crossings with over 1500m of footpath / cycleway and vizirail safety fencing installed.
Working within an enforced change to the project timeframe required a technically challenging series of ten traffic management phases, including a series of night closures. This has enabled Vistry Homes to move residents in by the end of June 2022, having only started works in December 2021.
Further works are on-going on Castle Farm Way to facilitate the second toucan crossing, due to be completed in October.
McPhillips Contracts Manager Shaun Matthews commented: “This project is a classic case of how versatile we have to be as a business. We were informed by our client in March that our original timeline for works had to change in order to accommodate new deadlines for cable installations. To achieve this new deadline required additional planning and resources, which has enabled us to reduce the works by eight weeks to meet the deadline. Well done to all involved, a great team effort.”
