October:
October is the climax of the dry season on the African Savannah. Temperatures are typically in the low 80s and occasional thunderstorms are quite likely.
The savannah in our corner of the world has not exactly been dry! Whilst we’ve not experienced violent storms, we’ve certainly had our fair share of rain. One day in particular was a total washout.
However, just like our neighbours in the Rhino habitat, come rain or shine it’s head down and horns out as we move into the final phase of building Heart of Africa.
The month began with work on the areas for various bird species. High up in the pecking order were the foundations and pads in readiness for posts to be installed by our aviary specialist. Further works were carried out on the wetland and other aviaries.
On Wednesday 9th the giraffes moved into their new home. It was a proud moment for the keepers as the animals were transported by truck and trailer. Having had a good ‘nose around’, we’re delighted to report that the giraffes looked every bit at home in their new surroundings.
Further work is about to begin in the hidden savannah. Painting the rock work and a mural, plastering the ceilings and hanging doors. We’ve created access for the zoo to start adding a few touches themselves.
The anticipation was positively electric before we pressed the switch on the high voltage system that feeds the hoof stock, wetland aviary, meerkat and aardvark habitats. We’re in the process of adding a few finishing touches before these areas are handed over to the zoo.
The bridge decking on the roof of the podium has received its waterproofing. When you take the Heart of Africa tour it’s from here that you’ll gaze across the entire savannah. We’re currently working on the food and beverage areas, so you’ll be able to top up your energy levels before you press on.
In our previous diary entry, we let you into a secret. Our work on the collection of 51 environmentally-friendly luxury lodges, is currently at differing stages, imagine a production line of lodges and you’ll get the picture. We’re now prepping ready to lay slabs in the two-storey welcome building, which will include a restaurant and bar area.
All in all, it’s been another productive month. We’ll keep you posted with our next instalment.
Until next time…
