SELLY OAK NEW ROAD PHASE 1B, BIRMINGHAM

Works on Selly Oak New Road Phase 1B were delivered under Birmingham City Council’s Highways & Infrastructure Framework using an NEC Option C contract.

The scheme involved the design and construction of significant highway improvements to the Selly Oak Triangle to improve access to key development sites, including the Birmingham Battery Site Life Sciences Campus and enable the regeneration of Bournbrook/Selly Oak centre.  The Selly Oak Triangle is made up of Bristol Road, Harborne Lane and Chapel Lane and key activities included:

  • Three major junctions were re-configured to improve traffic flows and upgrade the bus, pedestrian and cycle facilities.
  • An existing elevated Sainsbury’s surface level car park was reduced in size which required demolition of a 200m long x 3.5m high brick retaining wall on the car park perimeter and construction of its replacement 12m further into the site.
  • 160m of Harborne Lane (between the Bristol Road and Chapel Lane) widened by 12m and converted to a two-way dual carriageway with enhanced footways and cycleway.
  • Chapel Lane was widened to facilitate two-way traffic and a mini-roundabout was constructed at the entrance to the Battery Retail Park.
  • Bristol Road between the Harborne Lane and Chapel Lane junctions was narrowed to provide improved pedestrian facilities and two new toucan crossing were constructed.
