The Deep Dig… Jon Matthews

My role at McPhillips is…
Health & Safety Manager (SHEQ Manager).

I have been with the company since…
November 2013 starting as the Stores Co-Ordinator, I was in that role for 4 years until being invited by the directors to take up my current role.

As one of the longest serving employees, the biggest change in the industry I have seen is…
Safety protocols and equipment have evolved significantly. Companies prioritize worker safety through better training, monitoring, and protective equipment.

I would describe my professional development with McPhillips as…
From day one in the SHEQ department I have undertaken many training courses which have helped me gain knowledge and developed my skills as a health and safety professional.

A typical day for me would be…
Up at 6am, take the dog out, Breakfast, jump into the car and drive to a McPhillips construction site which can be anywhere from the middle of Birmingham to Doncaster, carry out a SHEQ inspection and then write a report for the site management team.

The most challenging aspect of my role is…
Getting people to understand their legal duties.

I would describe my colleagues as…
Very professional.

My colleagues would describe me as…
Ken Bruce, one year out.

The single biggest thing that sets McPhillips apart is…
Reputation.

Outside of work I really enjoy…
Walking the fairways at the Wrekin Golf Club trying to play golf.
